In order to ensure smooth operation without excessive vibration, any internal combustion engine must be well-balanced. To put it more exactly, the rotating assembly requires balancing to offset the weight of moving pistons and rods. There are two main kinds of balancing – internal and external. The internal balancing is more preferable and implies using counterweights attached to the crankshaft inside the motor, while the flywheel or flexplate has a neutral balance. As for the external balancing, it's applied when the counterweights are insufficient, and a harmonic balancer adds some weight to the assembly. Often, the balancer also works as a pulley for drive belts.
Why you may need a racing harmonic balancer? First of all, this part has to be reconsidered when engine modifications are planned, such as installing a new crankshaft, aftermarket pistons, etc. The factory balancer is fine only for the stock components and settings. During racing competitions, the motor has to withstand high RPM such as 6,000 – 8,000 or even more. At these velocities, the forces trying to shift the crankshaft from its natural position get higher, the part starts flexing and twisting, which shortens its lifespan and leads to various failures. The right balancer helps to dampen torsional vibrations. Installing it, you make sure your motor will not only live longer but also develop higher horsepower.
Mainly, this power gain is achieved thanks to a more stable operation of camshaft drive, which is connected to the crankshaft and depends on its current position. If it twists, the camshaft's position can be negatively affected. The main thing, if you're about to install an aftermarket balancer, it has to be chosen right. Visit our online store and select from a wide assortment of high-quality racing harmonic balancers made by leading manufacturers with extensive experience in this area.
