Although some considered this change as a betrayal of the most authentic Porsche spirit, embodied in the classic air-cooled rear engine, the 924 series was a remarkable commercial success, regardless of the oil crisis that hit the western civilization during the early 1970s. The 924s received several improvements in many critical areas such as brakes and suspension; in 1979, a new line of turbo engines was also introduced. The production ended in 1988.
