The Tempest was offered as an entry-level compact auto in the autumn of 1960 for the 1961 model year. The vehicle was engineered on the GM unibody monocoque Y platform together with the Buick Skylark and Oldsmobile F-85. The vehicle model was also marketed under the LeMans name primarily starting in the 1962 model year, although Pontiac also produced several 1961 Le Mans two-door coupes. During 1964, the platform was designed anew with a full-length frame and renamed A-body. Overall, the Tempest name was taken out of production after 1970 in favor of Le Mans, a name used before for upmarket models of that series. Pontiac was also selling a modified version of the L-body Chevy Corsica as Tempest only for the Canadian market from 1988 to 1991.
