Pontiac's best-selling Grand Am model first saw the world in 1972. The model name was chosen to represent the luxury of the Grand Prix and the performance of the Trans Am combined in one single car. The Grand Am by Pontiac was built during three separate periods, between the years 1972 and 1975, 1978 and 1980, and then from 1985 until 2005. Originally, it was an A-body based mid-size sedan or coupe with frameless windows, a unique urethane 'Endura' nose, and chrome rear bumper, designed to compete with luxury sport sedans from European manufacturers. The second generation Pontiac Grand Am was downsized, constructed upon the G-body platform, and based on the LeMans. Like the previous generation, it had standard radial tires and Radial Tuned Suspension with sway bars in the front and rear. The third production run encompassed the third and fourth generations of the Grand Am; it was a completely redesigned compact car based upon the N platform.
