At first, the nameplate was used only to address hardtop body style automobiles, first being offered in the 1950 DeLuxe Eight and Chieftain Eight lines. Beginning 1959, the Catalina was built as a distinctly different model as the "entry-level" full-size Pontiac, thus seeing over five generations of continuous production. As a vehicle, the Pontiac Catalina was discontinued just after 1981 when Pontiac wanted to leave the full-sized automobile market, while following GM's downsizing plans. Over 3.8 million Catalinas were manufactured and sold from 1959 till 1981, when the production of this car was stopped.
