The Pontiac Acadian was a nameplate exclusively used for the Canadian market. The Acadian was first exposed in 1962. It was a badge-engineered Chevy II launched in order to add a compact and affordable car to the Canadian dealers’ stock list. Although the new model got some typical Pontiac styling features, the first-generation Acadian was marketed as a freestanding make, never featuring Pontiac’s logo. But in 1976 (when the second-generation car went on sale), the model got Pontiac’s badge and was now officially marketed by the brand. The newly-developed vehicle was based on the Chevrolet Chevette, a subcompact hatchback offered in the USA, and was the last GM vehicle to use the Acadian nameplate.
