Earlier there have been two types of vehicles: those equipped with a manual transmission and those with an automatic one. But recent technological advances have allowed to develop a semi-automatic transmission, which carves its niche somewhere between an automatic and a manual transmission. Semi-automatic vehicles are equipped with a paddle shifter that helps drivers shift gears manually. It is located at the back of the steering wheel and comes with 2 paddles. The right paddle marked with a "+" sign allows you to shift up, while the left one marked with a "-" sign is used for downshifting.
Semi-automatics combine the features of both automatic and manual transmissions, but technically, they’re still automatic transmissions that rely on hand control. A manual transmission requires the driver to engage the clutch pedal to shift gears. With a paddle shifter the driver can only send a signal to a computerized system that does the work of the clutch, just like in an automatic transmission. In fact, the main advantage of the paddle shifter is that it helps the driver to better respond to driving conditions, because the automated system can shift gears based only on engine speed.
Paddle shifters were originally developed for Formula One racing cars. Usually sports cars are equipped with a manual transmission, because it enables drivers to get the full potential out of their engines and ensures faster acceleration. But for aerodynamic reasons, the cabin of a Formula One car was too small to install a gear shifter, which is why it was equipped with a paddle shifter found on a steering wheel. Just like manual transmissions, paddle shifters allow for improved acceleration, as well as make it easier to squeeze more power out of an engine. But unlike standard gear shifters, paddle shifters allow the driver to keep both hands on the steering wheel and reduce footwork, decreasing driver distraction and increasing overall safety.
