The input shaft bearing is pressed onto the input shaft and secures the input shaft to the front of the transmission case. A bearing retainer contains a seal and fits over the input shaft and bearing. The front of the input shaft is supported and turns on the pilot bearing or bushing in the end of the crankshaft. The clutch disc slides on the input shaft splines, transferring power from the engine when the clutch is engaged, or allowing the input shaft to remain stationary when the clutch is disengaged. The input shaft gear is meshed with and transfers power to a cluster gear.
Inspect the input shaft for obvious signs of physical damage and excessive runout, which would indicate a bent condition. Check the pilot bearing contact surface area and main bearing surfaces area for defects. Inspect the splines for wear or damage, making sure the clutch disc can slide smoothly. Examine the gear for chipped, cracked or broken teeth. Check the synchronizer blocking ring mating area for smoothness and inspect the clutch teeth.
