The Nissan Frontier was developed by the Japanese carmaker primarily for the North American market, but is also available in Asia, Europe, and Australia under the Navara nameplate. It is curious that vehicles for the European market are assembled in Spain, so the name is derived from a Spanish northern region, Navarre. In its first generation, the Frontier featured an inline four-cylinder engine, while a V6 engine was added to the lineup only in 1999. Up to 2003, the Frontier could be ordered only with rear-wheel drive, while the 4×4 configuration was offered as an option only in the last year of the first generation.
