Introduced in 1987, the Mercury Tracer was one of so-called “import hunters” designed by Ford specifically for the U.S. and Canadian markets. Largely based on the export Ford Laser that was offered primarily in Asia, the Tracer was originally intended to sustain severe competition from the Japanese automakers’ offerings. Launched as a successor to the Lynx model, the Tracer entered the subcompact market niche. By 1990, Mercury prepared the second generation of the series. The new model was larger, better equipped, and positioned higher than the predecessor. After that, the Tracer was renewed one more time in 1996. The model's production was completely stopped by the end of 1999.
