The Mercury Tracer debuted in 1987 as replacement for the successful but aging Mercury Lynx. Based on Mazda’s 123 chassis, the Tracer was a subcompact car available in different body styles: a 3- and 5-door hatchback and 5-door station wagon. The first generation was produced up to 1989, and, after a one year gap, the second generation was launched in 1991, constructed on the Mazda B platform and sharing the body with the popular Ford Escort and the Japanese Mazda Protege. This second generation was available as a 4-door sedan or a 5-door station wagon. The third and the last updated generation was introduced in 1997, and after two years the model was eventually discontinued.
