The production run of the Mercury Tracer began in 1987. The first generation of this subcompact vehicle was introduced in the following body style options: three- / five-door hatchbacks and five-door station wagon. The model came with a 1.6L Mazda B6 I4 engine and either a three-speed Mazda F3A automatic or a five-speed manual gearbox. The second generation was released in 1990. It introduced several updates: hatchback options were replaced with a four-door sedan, new types of engine (1.8L Mazda BP I4 and 1.9L CVH I4) were added instead of the previous one. Apart from this, the list of transmissions was completely changed: options of the first generation were replaced by a four-speed F-4EAT automatic and a five-speed M5 manual. The third release appeared in 1996. Body styles remained the same, but a manual gearbox was offered in another, five-speed IB5 option. The new model was equipped with a 2.0L SPI 2000 I4 engine.
