It was plain old competition that inspired Mercury in the mid-1980's to make that timely step into aerodynamic automobile shaping. The result was a great success known as the Mercury Sable. This mid-size sedan/wagon with a FF-layout was truly innovative in appearance: huge glass areas with scarcely noticeable pillars, flush headlights with a “lightbar” in between, and not a hint of rectangularity. Of the three engines available in 1986-1991, the 3.0-liter Vulcan V6 was the most frequently chosen, providing 140 hp. The influential “cosmic” design was further reinforced in 1996-1999, making the Mercury Sable models of those years especially recognizable; the 2000 redesign, however, brought more conservative shape, adding optional traction control. Finally, in 2008, after a two-year interlude, the 5th generation Sable gained noise-reducing equipment.
