The Mercury Mountaineer was unveiled in 1996 (for the 1997 model year). It was designed as a mid-size sport utility vehicle with either a rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive layout. The models of the first generation were equipped with a powerful engine (4.0L Cologne V6 or 5.0L Windsor V8) and automatic transmission (four- or five-speed option). The second generation appeared on the market in 2001. A 5.0L engine left the lineup, but a 4.6L Modular V8 was added instead. A four-speed gearbox was also dropped. The next version of the model was introduced to customers in 2005. Engine options remained without changes, while an automatic transmission became available in the following alternatives: a five-speed 5R55E and a six-speed 6R. The production run of the model ended in 2010.
