The production of the earliest generation of the Mercury Montego began in 1968. It offered two-door convertibles, two-door hardtop coupes, four-door wagons and four-door sedans. The lineup of engines included the following variants: a 4.1L l6, 4.9L V8, 5.8L V8, 6.4L V8, 6.6L V8 and 7.0L V8. Both manual (three- and four-speed) and automatic (three-speed) gearboxes were available. Next generation was in production between 1972 and 1976. The range of available body styles went through certain changes: wagons and convertibles were replaced with two-door fastback coupes and four-door station wagons. A 7.0L V8 engine left the line, but a 7.5L V8 unit was added instead. A four-speed manual gearbox was also dropped. The third generation entered the market after a long pause – in 2005. It was constructed as a four-door sedan equipped with a 3.0L Duratec 30 V6 engine and either a six-speed Aisin automatic or a Ford/ZF continuously variable transmission. Its production ended in 2007.
