The Mercury Grand Marquis is, for most people, a famous nameplate. After the elegant hardtop, the Marquis, gained higher trim in 1975, adding “Grand” as a title, this model ascended to the top of the lineup and was in the vanguard of rivalry with non-Ford auto-giants and accompanied Mercury throughout its existence. The original Grand Marquis had a variety of body styles; after the introduction of the Ford Panther in 1979, it became the flagship sedan. The “classical” 1980's Grand Marquis had 5.0-liter (later 5.8-liter) Windsor V8 engine and a 4-speed AOD automatic transmission. The 90's generation, now a 4-door sedan, had an all-new body, full-width taillights and a chrome waterfall grille. Aerodynamics, steering, suspension and brakes were improved – no longer under the yoke of competitive obligations, the Grand Marquis obtained its own perfection.
