The Mercury Comet was launched in 1960. The first generation of the model offered several options of body style: coupe, sedan and station wagon and the following variants of engine: a 2.4L I6, 2.8L I6 or 4.3L V8. Both manual (three- or four-speed) and automatic (two-speed) transmissions were available. The second generation entered the market in 1964: a two-door station wagon left the lineup and a two-door convertible was added instead. Four-speed manual and three-speed automatic versions of the gearbox were available. The third generation followed with the same body styles available, while the fourth one was offered in a single two-door coupe variant. The last generation appeared in 1971 and offered sedans only, either two- or four-door.
