Aiming to attract new customers, Mazda launched its line of mid-size upper-end cars in 1970. Introduced in Japan as the Capella, the model was renamed the 616, 618 and RX-2 (depending on the powertrain installed) for most export markets. Unlike the parental model that was offered up to 1978, the Mazda 616 was on sale in the USA only in 1970-72. The car was equipped with a 1586 cc NA I4 engine that transmitted the torque to either a 3-speed automatic or a 4-speed manual gearbox. In 1972, the model underwent a revision that included installation of a new engine. After that, it was reintroduced under the 618 nameplate.
