Mazda 3 Transmission Filters

A transmission filter is a part that sometimes becomes the reason for various misunderstandings among car owners. Some believe it requires replacement each time the fluid is changed, others think there is no need to do it. The filter is commonly located inside, right above the transmission pan, so you have to remove the pan to get to the filter. The function it performs is quite obvious: it traps dirt particles, the by-products of wear, etc. However, unlike the engine that receives gallons of fuel and tends to collect carbon deposits, the gearbox is a closed hydraulic system.

This means that the actual need to replace the filter usually occurs along with more serious issues requiring the overhaul or even replacement of the whole assembly. In most cases, ATF remains relatively clean, and the quantity of particles trapped by the filter is too small to replace it with each fluid change. Some automakers don't even install this part, relying on a simple screen to catch debris while refilling the system.
