Like other electrical wires, spark plug wires act as the conductors of electric current. High-voltage impulses come from the distributor or individual ignition coils and finally reach spark plugs. The plugs, in turn, create a spark that ignites fuel inside the cylinders. Due to severe operating conditions, spark plug wires can crack, become brittle, or break down over time. Wire damage can cause a weak spark or misfiring, which means incomplete combustion or even failure to ignite fuel in the corresponding cylinder. Depending on how bad your wires are, your auto may run poorly or even refuse to start.
If you suspect a spark plug wire problem in your Mazda 3, the reason can also be in spark plugs or ignition coils. In fact, malfunctioning plugs or wires can shorten the lifespan of ignition coils due to higher loads the coils have to encounter. Yet, the wires can be hard to check. Their nominal resistance is written in manuals and can be easily measured with a multimeter, but this method doesn't help if the malfunction is intermittent. So, it's wise to replace the wires when they have already worked for about 150,000 miles approximately and you suspect that something goes wrong with the ignition. If you need replacements, our store provides an exhaustive collection of Mazda 3 spark plug wires, ignition wires & components.
