Mazda 3 Crankshafts

One of the main parts of the engine rotating assembly, the crankshaft transforms the reciprocating motion of pistons into rotation. The loads it's subject to are very high, and in order to provide the necessary strength for many thousands of miles, this part is made of high-grade cast iron or forged steel, treated with high accuracy and minimum tolerances, and located in a place where lubrication is most intensive. Supported by journal bearings, the crank has two seals located in the front and rear side of the motor, which help to keep oil inside.

Both of them are made of special wear- and oil-resistant material and can serve more than 100,000 miles, but still, their wear is inevitable, and leaks caused by faulty main seals may develop. Like in most other cars, the front main crankshaft seal in the engine of the Mazda 3 is hidden behind the drive pulley, while the rear one is located near the flexplate or flywheel and requires much more time and effort to replace, as the process includes the removal of transmission.
