HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlights have many advantages over halogen headlights. They produce 2-3 times as much light, they consume less power, and they’re far more resistant to impact and vibration. Unlike a halogen bulb, which uses a fragile heated filament to produce light, in a HID bulb an arc is passed between 2 electrodes inside the bulb that ignites Xenon gas. A ballast is used to convert the vehicle’s DC (Direct Current) to AC (Alternating Current) and supply the high voltage needed to create the spark, but once the spark is initiated it takes much less power to sustain. HID bulbs also last 5-6 times longer than halogen bulbs, but sooner or later you can experience reduced light output, flickering, or complete bulb failure.
However, when shopping for replacement bulbs you should know that all HID/Xenon bulbs are not the same. Bulbs with a 3000K color temperature on the Kelvin scale produce a yellowish light, while bulbs with a 6000K or greater color temperature produce a blueish-white to blue light. Yellow light can be desirable for fog lights and blue light is stylish, but if you want the best light for nighttime driving safety, you want the 5000K color temperature that you get with Lumen Performance Headlight HID/Xenon Bulbs.
