The beginning of the Jeep Grand Cherokee story dates back to 1983, when AMC was designing a replacement to the smaller Jeep Cherokee. Three famous designers — Giorgetto Giugiaro, Larry Shinoda, and Adam Clenet, created and built a clay model of the Cherokee successor. Nevertheless, the basic design for the new model was executed by AMC's in-house designers and the Jeep Concept 1 show car appeared. At the end of the 1980s, Chrysler purchased AMC and continued developing a new Jeep model. The Grand Cherokee became the first SUV featuring a unibody design for increased durability. The first generation was called the ZJ. In 1995, it got a facelift when the engine and the overall appearance were enhanced and restyled. The second generation Grand Cherokee had the WJ name. This new model didn't have much in common with the previous generation and shared only 127 parts with the original. The next Grand Cherokee generation displayed Chrysler's desire to emphasis on-road performance over off-road capabilities by decreasing vibration and noise levels. The fourth-generation Grand Cherokee saved its classic Jeep design combined with a contemporary and streamlined body style. Its interior is comfortable and luxurious, with advanced electronics options.
