The Dispatcher Jeep or the Jeep DJ was originally produced in 1955 by Willys company which then was renamed Kaiser Jeep. Then during 1970-1984 the DJ series Jeeps were produced under AM General that handled government and military automotive programs. The Jeep DJ was a two-wheel-drive variant of famous CJ series. The DJ models were available with many different body options such as a hard top, soft top or a full van body. In 1959 was introduced the Jeep Gala sold at export markets. The same year a similar model called the Jeep Surrey made its appearance in the U.S. market. With its nimble size and open bodywork, it became very popular like a car for fun. The main target markets were resort hotels and recreation centers. The Surrey came in vivid colors like pink, light green, and light blue, the tops were striped using the same color as the body. Some of the DJs were offered with the right-hand driver's position for postal delivery use. Most models only had the driver's seat and a mail tray instead of the second seat. The postal DJ versions, like DJ-A through DJ-M became the Postal/Dispatch Jeep.
