Willys-Overland Motors released the Jeepster, which was the Commando's ancestor, after World War II. The company wanted to manufacture a vehicle that could bridge the gap between trucks and passenger cars. Originally, the Jeepster was in production from 1948 to 1950. Later, Kaiser company acquired Willys-Overland Motors in the mid-1950s, and in 1966, introduced a new Commando Jeepster, which managed to become more successful and popular than the original model. The Commando was offered in four body configurations including pickup, cabriolet, roadster, and station wagon.
