Honda was one of the first auto manufacturers which entered the market with a full-size crossover SUV having three rows of seating. The Honda Pilot was unveiled in 2002. The Pilot was developed by Honda Design Studio in California specifically for American buyers who wanted expanded seating and cargo capacity, but were searching for something other than a minivan. While many SUVs of that time were built on truck platforms, the Pilot’s platform had much in common with the Honda Odyssey and the Honda Accord platforms. It also shared underpinnings and the power train with the luxury Acura MDX. It demonstrated a unibody design and suspension tuned to provide prompt handling and a smooth, car-like ride. However, it was also enhanced with integrated perimeter frame rails that help to overcome light off-road conditions. The Pilot instantly took the right place on the market thanks to its spacious cabin and three rows of seating suited for eight occupants. Add a capable V6 powerplant, exterior styling and it is quite easy to understand why the Pilot became very popular with buyers, having sold more than 100 thousands units during its second production year.
