In the 1990s American SUV market began growing rapidly. That time Honda company had no decent SUV to offer to their customers and had no time for engineering one. It would take Honda a few years to develop an SUV and to break into this exploding market would be too late. That is why Honda decided to find a partner. They made arrangements with Isuzu about selling the Isuzu Rodeo SUV in the USA in exchange for Isuzu rebadging some of Honda small cars in Japan. Thus, The Passport was a result of a fruitful alliance between two companies and actually was a re-badged version of truck-based SUV Isuzu Rodeo. There is an interesting story connected with the vehicle’s name. The Honda management team had no time to hire a consultant to come up with a name, so they found three potential model names among their motorcycle models. These names – Elsinore, Odyssey and Passport – were already licensed to the company. They tested all names in a consumer focus group and the Passport name was chosen. Thus, the Passport got its name from the variation of the Honda Super Cub motorbike.
