A fuel injector sprays pressurized fuel supplied by the fuel pump. On Direct Injection engines, the fuel is sprayed directly into the combustion chamber. On Port Injection engines, the fuel is sprayed into the intake port towards the intake valve. When the engine control computer commands the injector, a solenoid in the injector lifts a valve off its seat and fuel flows. The injector on-time, also called pulse width, determines the richness of the air/fuel mixture. This part is critical for dependable engine operation, fuel economy, and reduced emissions.
