During the late 1970s, the automotive market was invaded by compact pickup trucks. GMC took the challenge debuting on the scene with the GMC S-15 in 1982. Versatile, reliable, and powerful, the model became an instant hit. Eventually renamed the Sonoma, the pickup truck was available in several trims with the aim to meet the needs of a large number of buyers. In 1994 the second generation came introducing several improvements as well as the optional Highrider setting, a series of calibrations and adjustments which made the Sonoma a capable off-roader. The series was discontinued in 2004, when the GMC Canyon debuted.
