GMC Sierra Shocks & Struts

An automotive suspension includes two fundamental components: the shock absorber (damper) and the spring. These two parts complement each other to let the suspension do what it’s supposed to – absorb road irregularities, ensuring optimal stability, control, and ride comfort. While the spring forms a flexible foundation that the chassis sits on, the shock is what prevents this foundation from oscillating. While controlling the spring’s motion, the damper transforms energy into heat. It’s possible thanks to the elaborate internal architecture and fluid or compressed gas. However, whilst the service life of springs is quite long, the shocks are much less durable, as they are susceptible to wear that eventually results in leaks.

While shock absorbers are separate components in relation to coil springs, struts integrate shock absorbers and springs in one assembly. Shocks can be replaced separately, but when struts get damaged, the entire assembly is usually replaced.
