The manufacturer subjects turbos to severe OE qualification tests to make sure that they have a sturdy design and deliver safe and reliable performance. For instance, they undergo a 1,000-hour durability test that is run on-engine, during which even some engines die, but not a Garrett turbo! During a 200-hour thermal cycle test, extreme changes from low temperature to glowing red are made every 10 minutes, ensuring there are no distortion or cracking of the turbine housing.
