Unlike diesel fuel, gasoline is a highly volatile substance, and its flammable vapors require a special solution besides just providing the tightness of the fuel system. Under certain circumstances, the quantity of these vapors in the fuel tank increases, but just venting them out translates into air pollution and losing some part of hydrocarbons. Besides the tank, the canister is also connected to the intake manifold, with a purge valve in the line. While you're driving at moderate RPMs, the ECU opens this valve to blow up the canister with the flow of air, so that the vapors are sucked into the manifold for further combustion. However, over time, the vent lines may clog up, or the valve can get stuck in a partly open position, which affects performance.
