Ford Probe Spark Plugs

Unveiled in 1988 and produced until 1997, the Ford Probe was an innovative coupe, the result of a fruitful cooperation between Ford, responsible for a sleek and aerodynamic body, and Mazda, which designed the drivetrain and engines. The Probe was a good performer, and its main systems, brakes, suspension, and many other mechanisms were sufficiently reliable. As for the ignition system, the Probe uses a distributor traditional for most gasoline vehicles at that time. Due to harsh working conditions, such components as a distributor cap, spark plugs, and ignition wires have a limited lifespan.

There are two kinds of spark plugs: so-called “hot” and “cold” spark plugs, depending on those recommended for a certain engine. A typical spark plug consists of electrodes to create a spark and ceramic coating to isolate the central electrode and transfer part of heat out of the combustion chambers. Hot plugs feature a smaller size of this coating to keep a higher temperature on its surface in order to reduce carbon deposits forming there during short trips. In cold spark plugs, the ceramic layer is larger and stronger; such plugs can withstand higher temperatures but remain less hot, which is useful during long operation at high RPM.
