Your car uses electricity in order to run the ignition system and electrical equipment. The required electrical energy comes from a rechargeable battery that is charged by an alternator. What the alternator basically does is convert mechanical energy produced by the engine into electrical energy. The alternator itself is run via a belt from the engine. Basically, it is comprised of a stator and a rotor. The stator consists of a number of wire coil windings, while the rotor revolves inside them. The rotor is an electromagnet and as it spins inside the stator coils, it produces much more electricity than it is supplied with.
There is a considerable amount of complaints about Ford Focus alternators on models manufactured from 2005 till 2007. The problem, however, is not with the alternator as a part, but with its location. Namely, the alternator on these models is located close to the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter which get extremely hot while the car is running. This intense heat can cause premature failure of the alternator.
