The Ford Festiva is a subcompact car that was produced by different subsidiaries of Ford for different markets. The first car of this lineup was designed by Mazda on demand of the parent company Ford and made its debut in 1986 in Japan as the Ford Festiva. In parallel with Mazda, another company – South Korean Kia Motors, which also was a subsidiary of the Ford Motor Company, started to produce the Festiva under the license as the Kia Pride. Mechanically and stylistically, both the Festiva and the Pride had much in common with the Mazda 121. The North American premiere of the model took place in 1988. All Festivas offered for American buyers received a few typical Ford styling cues, such as the grille and Ford emblem to be distinctively identified a part of the brand's product range. The next-generation Festiva was jointly created by Kia and Ford. It retained most of layout and powertrain parts of the earlier model, becoming slightly longer and receiving more rounded body style. In 1993, the American Festiva changed its name to the Ford Aspire.
