Trailers are generally required to have brakes. The reason for it is the combined weight of a trailer and a tow vehicle, which is too great for the brakes of the vehicle itself. Besides trailer brakes, there is a brake controller, required to enable the tow rig and trailer come to a safe stop. At the moment you step on the brake pedal, the trailer brakes are actuated by the brake controller, and voltage is slowly increased to create the required brake pressure. The brake controller is mounted in the cabin and works by modulating the electric signal to the electromagnets. Activated by electric current, the magnet makes the drum rotate and the actuating lever move, thus forcing the brake shoes against the drum. The brake controller regulates the electric signal, activating the brakes in due time and applying the exact amount of pressure.
