When it comes to reducing harmful emissions produced by the engine, it’s not only about the fumes coming out of the tailpipe. Gasoline is a volatile liquid whose vapors are highly flammable and rather toxic, and without a specific system helping to keep them under control, they would pose a threat to the environment. This evaporative emission control system is known as the EVAP, and you can find it in any more or less modern vehicle equipped with a gasoline engine, including your Ford Expedition. The main components of the EVAP are a vapor canister filled with charcoal, purge valve located in the line between this reservoir and intake manifold, and vent valve commonly positioned between the fuel tank and canister.

Gasoline vapors appearing in the tank get into the canister and are stored there when the engine is shut off or has not reached its working temperature yet. When it's running, in certain modes, the ECU opens the purge valve to blow out the vapors into the manifold. As for the vent valve, it lets air into the canister to improve ventilation.
