Ford Escape Vapor Canisters & Parts

Like pretty much any vehicle that consumes gasoline, your Ford Escape has the evaporative emission control system (EVAP) to retain flammable vapors. One of the main parts of the system is a vapor canister. Essentially, it's a small reservoir filled with charcoal and collecting the vapors that come from the fuel tank via the vent line. The reservoir is connected to the intake manifold through a purge valve that can be opened by the ECU in certain working conditions. When the engine is running, the valve periodically opens to create air flow and allow the vapors stored in the canister to be sucked into the manifold for further combustion.

Some common problems related to this system are a malfunctioning valve or damaged canister. The valve may clog up or get stuck in a partly open position, which affects the system's performance and makes the "Check Engine" warning light appear on the dash panel. If the canister is cracked, it results in leaks of air and/or fuel through this part.
