The Ford Custom nameplate traces its roots back to 1949. It was used through 1981 to describe different trim levels for Ford’s full-size vehicles. In 1950, the model got Custom Deluxe name and two years later it was changed to Customline. The name was in use again for the 1957 model year together with a new Custom 300 series. The Custom was the entry-level model, while the Custom 300 was an enhanced model. Later, the Custom range also included a better-trimmed version, the Custom 500 series. From 1960 to 1963, the Custom and its versions were not produced. This name was revived in 1964 to be used on the economy line of models. The Ford Custom was phased out after 1972, although the Custom 500 was in production for several years more. On the North American market, the Custom 500 name was changed to LTD "S."
