Door seals and weatherstripping keep moisture and wind from entering the cabin between the doors and body. They also help the doors fit properly in the body openings, so they close easily without looseness that could create rattles. Weatherstripping can become compressed and cracked with age, and some sections can become worn, torn, and detached. These flaws can result in wind noise and water leaking into the interior.
If you’ve noticed that the cabin is noisier as you drive on the highway or find a small lagoon in the foot well after a rain storm, those are sure signs of worn weatherstripping. However, such leaks may not be so easy to find. Start by examining the weatherstripping for damage. Squeeze the rubber with your fingers; if it’s no longer pliable it can’t provide an effective seal. Look for cracks, missing chunks and areas where it isn’t properly attached.
If there isn’t any obvious damage, run your hand and have a passenger run their hands around the perimeter of the doors as you drive to find the source of wind noise. Evidence of a water leak may only be carpet that’s damp to the touch after a rain shower. But even small leaks can eventually cause mold and mildew that create an unhealthy environment inside your vehicle, and moisture can cause corrosion in the floor pan and electrical components. Try having an assistant aim a hose at the door/body junction while you check for leaks inside.
The configuration of door weatherstripping will vary from vehicle to vehicle, but there is generally a continuous strip that runs around the perimeter of the door to seal the door to the body opening. Even though this seal can appear generic, it usually has a cross section profile specifically designed for the application, and it may be affixed with sealant and/or fasteners. In addition to this seal there are the seals that prevent moisture and debris from entering the door past the window, and many older vehicles have vent window seals. There may be additional molded seals to channel water away from specific areas.
