The Charger lineup, intermittently offered by Dodge since 1966 up to nowadays, includes a large number of cars of different sizes, trim levels, prices, and market segments. From 1966 until 1974, the Charger was a high-performance pony car based on the B-Body platform and positioned below the larger and better-equipped Challenger. In 1975, Dodge released the brand new Charger that was intended to enter the luxury personal car market niche and to expand the Chrysler Corporation’s presence there. Through 1981-1987, the Charger was a subcompact front-wheel drive hatchback designed to compete with the increasingly popular European and Japanese subcompacts. Finally, in 2006, Dodge introduced the LX platform-based Charger, a full-sized high-performance 4-door sedan. The car has been extensively used as a police interceptor, replacing the old Crown Victoria.
