A timing belt is designed to synchronize the movement of the engine’s valves and pistons. On many engines, it also drives the oil pump, and water pump. Installed behind the protective cover, this belt is invisible, and that explains how the timing belt has become known as the forgotten belt. When the timing belt breaks the synchronization of the engine parts is lost. When this happens, on most engines the valves interfere with the pistons. As a result, valves can be broken with possibly even more severe and expensive damage to pistons, cylinders, etc. To avoid this, you should check and follow the manufacturer's recommended intervals for timing belt replacement.
