A timing belt is designed to enable the crankshaft to drive the camshaft and synchronize the movement of the engine’s valves and pistons. On many engines, it also drives the oil pump, water pump and balance shafts. It's a flat rubber belt with teeth which maintain precise timing between internal engine components to ensure smooth and efficient operation. Because of high rotational speeds, vibrations and extreme temperatures, timing belts and matching components are constantly subjected to a great deal of stress. For instance, overheating and worn-out sealing rings of ball bearings result in increased metal wear and even the jamming of pulleys, and that can easily cause belt damage.

This is why it's strongly recommended that the timing belt's matching components are replaced along with the belt.
