Chrysler 300 Rack & Pinion Steering Systems

If you own the Chrysler 300 launched in 2005 or later, then the rack & pinion assembly is the core component of your steering system. Whereas many older vehicles use the steering box, modern automobiles have almost completely switched to the rack & pinion scheme because of better feedback, higher reliability, simplicity, and lower cost of such a system. In this architecture, the steering shaft is fitted to the gear (pinion), which is meshed with the teeth of the rack. When the shaft rotates, the gear makes the rack move right or left while turning the wheels to the opposite direction.

The rack & pinion mechanism in your car is integrated with the hydraulic components, which make your driving experience much more enjoyable but also add an array of weak spots typically causing a headache for car owners. Besides, the connections between the rack and tie rods are covered with rubber boots, which are not as strong as they could be.
