A speedometer calibrator is an electronic device created to reprogram your engine’s ECM for adjusted speedometer/odometer readings and the necessary part-throttle shifting. If you happen to have installed the tires that are smaller or larger in their diameter than those tires supplied originally by the automaker, or if you are using a ring and pinion gear set with a gear ratio different from the original one, then you need to reprogram your vehicle’s ECM. Your Chevy Tahoe’s computer is designed to calculate the speed, with all of the necessary calculations stemming from your stock tire diameter.
And if you happen to have installed shorter or taller tires, or altered the rear gear ratios, then your vehicle’s computer won’t have a way of knowing the proper speed. To sum it all up, the automatic transmission will not shift the way it should, and your speedometer/odometer readings will not be as accurate as required by the federal law.
