The Chevrolet Monte Carlo was designed as a personal-luxury two-door coupe first revealed to the public on September 18, 1969 and produced from 1970 through 1988. It was based on the Chevy Chevelle and featured the longest hood of all the Chevrolet models. The Monte Carlo had gone through six generations. The first four generations of the Monte Carlo (1969-1988) were available in a wide range of V8 engines. The car featured rear-wheel drive. In 1978, the car became available with a V6. The automaker had to downsize their cars in the 1980s because of new severe fuel-saving requirements caused by the energy crisis. The last two generations (1995-2007) used front-wheel drive and were equipped with V6 engines. However, a 3.8 L V6 used in the Monte Carlo SS from 2000 was replaced by a 5.3 L V8 in 2006.
