The Chevy Malibu entered production in 1964 as a luxurious four-door sedan. But being engaged into the muscle car battles, GM soon released the Malibu Sports Coupe (hardtop and convertible body styles). For the second generation (1968-1972), a two-door convertible was added. All three configurations were often redesigned. To meet the demands of the federal crash standards, the third-generation Malibu (1973-1977) was increased in size, but it still remained a mid-size car. The fourth-generation rear-wheel drive model was available in a range of V8 and V6 engines. There also manufactured a trim designed for police cars. The fifth-generation Malibu (1997-2003) was equipped with either a six- or four-cylinder engine and featured front-wheel drive. For the six generation (2004-2007), the production of the Malibu SS equipped with a 3.9 L V6 engine was renewed. Also, GM offered the new large five-door sedan Malibu Maxx which had an increased cargo space and a lot of advanced options. Generally, the seventh-generation car remained unchanged, except for several facelifts.
