Chevy Corvette Camshafts

Chevy Corvette Camshafts

In terms of its function, the camshaft is similar to the crankshaft. Both are engineered to provide transformations between rotations and reciprocating motion. However, whereas the crank is meant to end up with the rotary motion, the cam does the opposite. Receiving the rotations from the crankshaft, the cam converts them into the linear action used by the valvetrain for doing its job. The dimensions, strength, position, and even number of the camshafts differ depending on the engine architecture. These parameters to a large degree outline the characteristics of the assembly.

The modern generation of the Chevy Corvette is available with the engines belonging to the GM’s small-block family. While substantially differing in details, they are structurally similar to the original 1955 Small Block with its OHV layout and the single cam installed in the block. Therefore, the good news is that you deal with the only camshaft in your engine. The bad news is that it features a rather elaborate design and has to be heavy-duty, which makes it pretty expensive. If something is wrong with your Chevy’s camshaft and you seek an opportunity to get a less expensive replacement than that offered by GM, browse our Chevy Corvette camshafts & components inventory.
