The Chevrolet Corvair, introduced in 1960, was a compact car designed to compete with Ford and Volkswagen, dominating the segment respectively with the Falcon and the Beetle models. The new Chevy was well accepted, soon becoming one the most popular cars on the U.S. roads. The Corvair featured a rear-mounted air-cooled engine and was the first American car ever to adopt such a configuration. The model was available in several body styles: 2-door coupe and convertible, 4-door sedan and station wagon, passenger or commercial van, pickup truck. In 1964, the second generation Corvair premiered, featuring a more modern styling as well as many technological improvements, such as fully independent suspensions. The Chevrolet Corvair was eventually dropped in 1969.
