There may be an infinite number of reasons for the annoying Check Engine light to come on, with some of the common ones being a faulty oxygen sensor. The task of this small component is to measure the concentration of oxygen in exhaust gases. If its levels are low, the engine runs rich, while more of the unburned O2 means the mixture is lean. The sensor sends this information to the computer in the form of a voltage signal that it generates as a result of a chemical reaction. The engine control computer, in turn, adjusts the fuel injector on-time to achieve a proper air/fuel ratio.

When the O2 sensor fails, or when it is old and doesn't provide timely feedback to the computer, the result is an unbalanced air/fuel mixture.
